Nangua Pumpkin & Seed Oil Health Benefits

Pumpkin (Nan Gua)

Botanical Name: Cucurbita (Pumpkin), Cucurbita pepo L. (Pumpkin Seeds)

Pumpkins and pumpkin seeds are both high in zinc and vitamin A making them a wonderful food and herb to support menses, strengthen the prostate, and aid fertility. They can also treat urinary tract infections and support the kidneys.

Several research studies highlight the presence of β-sitosterol and other phytosterols in pumpkin seeds and their potential health benefits:
  • Phytosterol Composition: Pumpkin seeds, and specifically pumpkin seed oil, contain a variety of phytosterols, including β-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol. Notably, some pumpkin seed oils are rich in Δ7-sterols, which differ from the Δ5-sterols that are more common in other vegetable oils.
  • Health Benefits:
    • Prostate Health: Research suggests pumpkin seeds may help alleviate the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) due to the presence of β-sitosterol and other compounds. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) | (.gov) and Healthline, studies have shown that pumpkin seed oil can reduce BPH symptoms and improve quality of life.
    • Heart Health: Pumpkin seeds are rich in antioxidants, magnesium, zinc, and unsaturated fats, which may contribute to improved heart health by potentially reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
    • Other Benefits: Pumpkin seeds also offer a good source of zinc, which may improve sperm quality, and contain tryptophan, an amino acid that can help promote sleep.
A 2021 study examined the phytosterols in hull-less pumpkin seed oil. The study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of these phytosterols against BPH. Researchers found that the oil was rich in phytosterols, including β-sitosterol, Δ7-campesterol, Δ7-sitosterol, and Δ7-avenasterol.
While pumpkin seeds and their components, like β-sitosterol, show promising health benefits, more research is often needed to fully understand their efficacy and mechanisms of action.
