POTS Therapies

1. COMPRESSION THERAPY
Cotton or other graduated compression socks worn daily, and compression pants for sleeping (Amazon)
2. HYDRATION AND ELECTROLYTE BALANCE (recipe and explanation below)
3. DIETARY ADJUSTMENTS: avoid baking soda as it is known to lower blood pressure. Olives and nuts are good sources of salt which can be beneficial.
4. Licorice Root – recipe belliw.
5. Handle stress with Heart Mudra for circulation – directions below

Homemade Electrolytes

Carol Ray – Ancient Secrets Cookbook
  • 3 1/2 cups cold organic coconut water
  • Pea-size of peeled grated ginger
  • 1/4 cup pure organic maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons cranberry, pomegranate, watermelon, or cherry juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon mineral salt (use less if you only have table salt)
Using a 4 cup or more container, add ingredients. Using a garlic press for peeled fresh ginger usually works well. Blend, shake, or stir well.
Coconut water contains calcium and potassium (about 16x more potassium than Gatorade!).
(great for Vata and Pitta Doshas but aggravates Kapha; benefits Adipose/fat and Rasa/blood plasma).
Licorice Root Decoction:
1/2 to 1 tsp organic licorice powder to 1 Cup filtered water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes on low. Strain and drink once or twice a day.

Precautions:

Can cause increase in blood pressure.
Avoid if you have a history of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, or if pregnant or breastfeeding. May have a laxative so avoid during diarrhea.
Benefits: Good for blood blood pressure and low blood sugar as well as the endocrine system and the liver. Good for respiratory problems, allergies, and coughs. Anti-spasmodic. Good for chronic fatigue, abdominal colic, ulcers, RNA viruses, and herpes simplex.

Heart Mudra:

Left Thumb goes inside right palm, pointing to index finger; close right fingers around left thumb; touch left middle finger tip to left thumb. Squeeze fingers 6 times. Increases heart blood flow. You can do this several times daily as needed.
