OVER-COMPENSATION: Are you breaking a basic law of healing?

The Health Coach

Just how many pharmaceutical medications do you take each and every day? Just how many nutraceutical supplements do you take each and every day? How many herbal preparations, essential oils, homeopathics or vibropathics do you take for weeks … or months … or years on end?
How about superfoods like goji berries (Did you know that wolfberries are a nightshadeSolanaceae Family?), royal jelly, chlorella or spirulina?

Or, how many of the latest and greatest MLM products to hit the market this week have you already signed up for?

How many?! In the aggregate, that is. Total number of pills and potions, liquids and lotions that you are throwing down that gullet of yours?

Let’s do a “medicine cabinet” audit right now. I mean right now, or else you may never take the time to do it in the future. Remember, we’re the health coach and we know just how important this first coaching session will be. So, let’s get busy.

Point of Information: As holistic health coaches, we make every attempt to practice what we preach. Therefore, may we make the following disclosures and admissions. First, we take no processed medicine or prescriptions of any type every day or week or month — only natural, organic, locally grown, freshly prepared food and beverage that is quite compatible with our body type. Secondly, when we do reach for a properly formulated probiotic, pure zinc supplement or calcium/magnesium combo, it is only when our body NEEDS it.

Here’s why we emphatically do NOT take a calcium supplement every day? Please read very slowly and carefully as these words of wisdom have been baked in the oven of life experience and seasoned with clinical observation. They may very well change your life:

“The following story illustrates what can go very wrong even in the “benevolent and benign” alternative health arena.

Many of our clients have segued over to the alternative health arena quite unsuspectingly (and most trusting) and, sometimes, end up with more severe health problems than before they entered it.

Take for instance the case of the peri-menopausal woman who has heard a thousand times that she needs to take calcium supplements as an insurance policy against osteoporosis.

Well, she takes them. She takes them religiously every day, every week, every month, for every year of her adult life.

And then, one day, she has a TIA (transient ischemic attack) and can’t figure out why.

No one told her that calcium is one of those minerals that needs to be taken in a specific combination with certain amounts of magnesium, boron, phosphorous, etc., especially for proper uptake for bone formation/strengthening. No one told her … … …
How Too Much Calcium Can Break Your Bones

Nor did they tell her about:

The Calcium Supplement Problem: As Serious As A Heart Attack

Calcium is one of those minerals that requires certain factors to be present in order for it to be properly digested and metabolized, absorbed and assimilated.

The human body is indeed knit together with calcium (as is the entire universe, incidentally) and this elegant organism has evolved unique ways for it to be efficiently utilized at the many times and in the many places that it is needed – sometimes desperately.

However, when certain “laws” are violated, the essential mineral calcium lies down in all the WRONG places and in all the WRONG ways.

Here are some examples: It starts to accumulate in the kidneys as kidney stones, in the liver and gallbladder contributing to the formation of gallstones, in the arteries as arteriosclerosis (plaque), in arthritic joints as bone spurs, calcium deposits or malformed bones, and in the vascular system of the head as calcified vessels in the brain.

In fact, the long term over-supplementation of calcium can contribute as a major co-factor to cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, glaucoma, osteoarthritis, depression, fatigue, and, oh yes, even osteoporosis, among many other maladies that plague modern society.

How many of us have heard about the many medical conditions and diseases which can be the byproduct of such unenlightened self-treatment?! We rarely stop to think about how our own healthstyle or habit or behavior may be a HUGE precipitating risk factor to the stroke or heart attack or gallbladder attack.

Or, in the case of our aforementioned middle-aged female client, such over-supplementation can most certainly serve as the physical root cause for a transient ischemic attack (TIA) – which may then put her one step away from a full-blown stroke.”

This story is not meant to scare or alarm the many readers who might – N O W – be looking very differently at their current treatment regime – whether it’s physician-prescribed or self designed. However, if you are now more inclined to take a close look at this issue then that’s very good. Taking a close look at it now may very well save you a lot of unnecessary pain and suffering in the future.

So, take a real close look into that medicine cabinet of yours, and make sure that you are not falling into the trap of: OVER-COMPENSATION.

With every good wish,

The next health blog in this continuing series on OVER-COMPENSATION begins with the following paragraph:

Now, can you imagine what might occur in this test tube known as the human body when you add multiple medicines (both pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals) at the same time over the course of months or years. The resulting interactions and potential synergies alone might be enough to kick over a horse. So, you can imagine how the homeostasis of the human frame, which exists in such a delicate balance, can be profoundly and fundamentally altered by the state of constant OVER-COMPENSATION, especially when it has been tinkered with in ways that no one has ever taken the time to objectively explore.

DISCLAIMER: Please know that we fully understand that some individuals, because of their own unique biochemistry, mineral depletion, dietary neglect and/or ignorance, genetic predispositions, hostile or demanding physical environment in which they live or work, etc. may require them to supplement calcium or magnesium or zinc. However, in this regard they ought to perform rigorous due diligence on their chosen product so that it is proven to be truly non-toxic, free of all unnecessary ingredients, in a highly bio-available form, etc.
Also, we would highly recommend that the individual first seek out organic, wholesome, fresh food sources for whatever regular mineral depletion they might NEED to compensate for.
Above all, we would point to the emotional, mental and psycho-spiritual aspects which may be present, some of which almost always act as the operative precursor to such chronic and debilitating imbalances. Working on these levels, while you compensate conservatively on the physical level, can prove to be a prudent approach, especially one that is free of those awful and ubiquitous side effects, unintended consequences, and/or collateral cellular, tissue or organ damage.
