A MOMENT. A REPRIEVE FROM ALL IT IS ASKED TO DO. SOMETIMES, IT JUST NEEDS A FLOAT.
In an Epsom salt solution that is more buoyant than the dead sea, your body can feel deep relief from stress. Once the pressure of the world is literally off of its shoulders, knees, and back, that freedom from gravity can allow your body to be relieved of so much more—high blood pressure, fatigue, joint and even muscle pain. You’ll be free for some serious relaxation—and later, an incredible night’s sleep.
FLOATING FAQs
At skin temperature and 1000 pounds of Epsom salt, the water you’ll find yourself reclined in will have you losing track of where it ends and your body begins.
For an hour—or more if you’d like—your mind is free of distraction and your body is free of gravity. The nothingness of that experience, is everything and more.
In total darkness and with your ears just below the surface, nothing can reach you. The outside world is now non-existent. Your focus can turn inwards where amazing things will happen.
Giving your body a break from gravity’s hold, can be transforming. The stimulation of no stimulation allows usually otherwise occupied parts of your mind and body to completely focus elsewhere.
1000 pounds of salt cradling your body will leave your skin silky and your hair smooth when you emerge. And unlike what you experience after a long bath, your skin will not be pruney! An Epsom salt solution is actually moisturizing and hydrating.
There’s no wrong way to float. Keep the lights off. Or turn them on. Listen to music or float in silence. Leave immediately or hang out after in the Lounge. Get lifted any way you like.
What do I need to bring? Nothing. Yourself and an open mind. Everything else is provided. Feel free to bring your own flip-fops and personal care items if you like.
What kind of tanks do you have? Our five state-of-the-art tanks are themselves works of art. We have three USA-made Evolution Float Pods, which resemble giant eggs with clamshell lids. We also have two UK-manufactured Ocean Float Rooms, accessed by a side door. They feature 7-foot high ceilings adorned with a starlight effect; this allows you to contemplate the infinite as you begin your journey.
Which tank should I float in? We are partial to both. Try each type and see if you have a preference. First-time floaters may appreciate the high ceilings in the Ocean Float Room to get their feet wet, so to speak. The Evolution Pod is the tank of choice of the XLIX Super Bowl Champions, the New England Patriots, who installed one in their training room at the start of the 2014-2015 season.
What’s this about “R.E.S.T.”? Floating is also known as R.E.S.T. or Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy. The perfect acronym for what all of our bodies need from time to time.
What should I do to prepare? Nothing specific. Ideally avoid caffeine 90 minutes before you float. It also best not to shave or wax right beforehand because the Epsom salt might sting a bit.
What if I don’t know how to float? No need to worry. The Epsom salt solution will do all the work for you. You couldn’t not float if you tried!
What if I recently dyed my hair? For the benefit of your hair color and for the tanks, please wait until the water runs clear when you wash your hair before coming to float.
What can I expect? Every experience is different and unique to each user. But probably something you’ve never felt before.
Is floating ‘legit’? Absloutely! Floating has existed for over 40 years with numerous published studies and media coverage that has discussed the physical, spiritual and intellectual benefits you are about to experience. If you’re interested, please visit our Dive Deeper portion of this site for more info.
Is it clean? Extremely. Our water is completely recirculated at least 3 times between each float through a 1 or 10 micron particulate filter, and then treated with either a combination of a germicidal UV lamp, ozone and hydrogen peroxide; or with a small amount of bromine. We test our water daily to ensure that your float will be safe and comfortable.
Is it weird? It is different. Your body is in an environment it probably hasn’t been in since birth. So yes. It will take some getting used to. But what worth doing doesn’t.
What if I wear contacts? You most likely will prefer to float without them, so be sure to bring your case and solution.
Can 2 (or more) people float in the same tank at once? No. Our tanks are designed for one, and we believe that floating is deeply personal and should be experienced alone. Additionally, NYC regulations prohibit more than one person in the tank. But we do have 5 tanks, so you can book at the same time as your nearest and dearest.
Can I float if I am pregnant? Yes. With the okay from your physician or midwife, you may float in your second or third trimester. Many pregnant women find floating helps relieve the joint pain and inflammation associated with carrying additional baby weight. Floating has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and boost endorphins which may help counteract the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy which can result in insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Anecdotally, many mothers-to-be in the tank experience an amazing bonding experience with their unborn baby know as the “mirror effect” where the baby rests peacefully in the womb while the mother rests in a similar womb-like environment.
